Night” by Florence B. Price (1887-1953), with text by Harlem Renaissance poet Louise C. Wallace (n.d.). This is planned to be the opening to my next recital of works by women composers, to be recorded in the winter and hopefully either live-streamed or broadcast as part of an upcoming NATS event. This piece is published in multiple sources, but SongHelix.com is a new and amazing resource to Art Song. I recommend that you peruse it. Information on “Night” is here. Information about Florence B. Price is present in multiple places, but I highly recommend the new book by Rae Linda Brown, “Heart of a Woman,” titled after one of Price’s most well-known pieces. I could not find any information on Wallace, other than referencing her as the poet to this piece and one note in a dissertation by Shana Thomas Mashego noting her as a “Negro Renaissance” poet.
